For more than a decade, PropMill’s primary focus has been the design and production of compelling experiences in the built environment, both physical and digital.

We work from the early stages of research and ideation, through design and production, to the installation and commissioning of each piece. They have ranged from individual objects or ephemeral media to permanent, building-scale installations at sites of historical and cultural significance.

PropMill strives to create installations that are flexible and easy to manage for the client, and accessible, memorable and joyful for the user.

This is what we call ‘experiential design’.

Why PropMill?

PropMill does not represent or distribute any particular audiovisual or mechanical equipment brand, supplier or technology. Our intention is always to first understand the opportunities of a location or context, the narrative of each and the needs of our client. From that understanding we can design experiences and identify materials and technologies to suit.

Understanding our client’s needs is of particular importance; only designs that answer those needs—and fit the client’s resources—can truly be successful for the client, and for those who experience the resulting work.

In the case of digital experiences, we design a custom interface, tailored to the end-user’s operational requirements and technical comfort level. This flexible, bespoke interface is why we create the control technology, exp[X], at the heart of our digital projects.

Process

Our work spans a wide variety of input disciplines, from research and curatorial skills to programming, traditional and computer animation, music composition and sound design, environmental graphic, urban and product design.

The process we follow begins with research and discussion about the site, the context and the client’s aims. From there we draw in specialist collaborators to suit each project’s potential, growing the team as we proceed through the various stages of concept design, development and production.

At every stage of the process the client is involved through appropriate forms of visualisation and simulation to communicate the evolving design for review, feedback and approval to proceed.

PropMill can manage the roles of various specialists, suppliers and integrators, giving the client easy contact to the creative, technical and practical aspects of the project.

PropMill is based on Turrbal and Jagera land, and acknowledges this Country and its Traditional Custodians. We pay our respects to the Elders, those who have passed into the dreaming, those here today and those of tomorrow.
